They are wasting their lives...

I see them coming out of their homes , already drenched in the rain of hate
some come early , some a little too late.

They have smeared their faces with coldness and disgust
burning homes, people and effigies
I don't know why but I can't stand it any longer.

They are wasting their lives. They are wasting their lives. They are choosing death, hatred and cruelty, self inflicted pain.

Cowards are leading them , from the back. Fools guiding them up to the rack. Fanatics manipulating them , Opportunists stripping them bare .

They are wasting their lives, choosing animosity, embracing fear. Killing and getting killed for something insane.

A curfew here , a mob there , thousands of young souls. Heaven doesn't matter when they live in a hellish hole.

They are blind for they do not see the happy lives of others
and waste their own life killing their own brothers.

They are wasting their lives, no guilt, no shame , no remorse. Born with a soft heart their hands are now bloody and coarse.

They are wasting their lives, I can't stand it any more. It's something I detest and abhor .

Caste Based Census -The Lone Positive move in the Muck called Reservation Politics.

I can still hear the nauseating sermons and lectures coughed out by our Secular leaders wherein they promised that caste , creed , religion shall no longer be the basis of any developmental politics. I have before my eyes our idealistic Constitution which promises the same things. Then again I also have in mind the glorious 60 years of our democratic republic where all idealistic notions of secularism and anti-caste stands were literally trampled upon by our Political fraternity , without any exception.

After almost 40 years of repulsive and foul mouthed indulgence in political cheap talk the govt. has finally come up with a honest idea. No more hypocrisy no more hidden agenda and shameless bigotry. We are finally ready to admit that caste does matter. Religion does matter. And why not?
after all 50 % of all govt jobs are allotted on the basis of caste..We already have had religion based reservation in place in the form of legal fiction . So why pretend otherwise. In fact systematically organising data with reference to such parameters shall only help us all in wiping out this menace of reservation.

I have never seen a needy fellow availing the advantages of this reservation policy. The rich as they say are getting richer the poor are getting slaughtered. Caste census would give us a real clear picture as to who all are getting undue benefits from the reservation system .

dynasty politics in india

Political families are peculiar to all democracies. In fact this is the reason why the supporters of autocracy and monarchy resent the popular definition of democracy (which is: by the people of the people and for the people). Be it the Kennedy clan in the U.S. or the Gandhi clan in India. The meaning of democracy has undergone a huge change and this fact can seriously jeopardize the glory attached with democracy as an ideal or at least the most preferable form of government.

Dynasty politics in India, and here I am talking about the India we know post 1950 , has developed rapidly and surprisingly also found support among the masses. Indira Gandhi's rise to power and then Rajeev Gandhi's succession, followed by Sonia Gandhi's entry in politics (although I concede she did so involuntarily) and now Rahul Gandhi's march as also his sister's role in the party's campaigns. In almost all these cases the persons concerned always managed to find mass following. This further strengthens the claims of the monarchists that people want certainty in terms of leadership, and such certainty can be best guaranteed by hereditary rule.

Our political scene is quite interesting because of the fact that almost all the parties which came into existence to oppose the Gandhi domination have also begun emulating the Congress' model and have thus embraced dynasty politics. Those which haven't are no better in matters of choosing leadership , for the system they have in place for choosing their party leaders is perhaps more autocratic than Ivan the Terrible's claim to Czarhood.

Let's start from the top of our great nation. We have the Abdullahs in Kashmir who have taken upon themselves the responsibility to edify their people. In Himachal Pradesh Mr. Prem Kumar Dhumal has successfully launched his son into politics , who by the way has taken a cue from Sharad Pawar and has already associated himself with B.C.C.I. and Indian Cricket .

In Punjab , Mr. Prakash Singh Badal has brought forward his son Sukhbir and daughter in law Harsimrat. In Haryana Deepinder Singh Hooda has taken up the mantel from Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

In Rajasthan the Scindia clan has quite conveniently associated itself with both the leading national parties in the form of Vasundhara Raje and Jyotiraditya capitializing on Madhavrao's political career.

In Andhra Pradesh NTR'S son in law Chandrababu Naidu succeeded to the throne after the 'family' dispute within the TDP.

But the most important state for dynasty politics is Maharashtra where the electorate has been dumb enough ( inspite of the fact that they have South Bombay as one of the constituency) to overlook this trend.
Sunil Dutt-> Priya Dutt.
Sharad Pawar-> Supriya Sule

and then of course we have those Thackreys. For a party claiming to be the Congresses' nemesis it is ironic that amongst all contemporary parties it is the only one which does not even pretend to be democratic in it's internal organisational structure. Balasaheb gives way to Udhav , Raj his cousin gets angry and forms his own party and not one party worker has any problem though only yesterday were they criticizing the Congress' obsession with the Gandhis.

Among others we have Sachin Pilot, Agatha Sangma, Rabri Devi etc. doing the honors of continuing the family tradition.

Another point.... if we can point a finger at a politician who's kids have not entered the political fray we can can also be pretty certain that that happened because the generation involved was quite useless and incompetent to have carried on the family trade. Rahul Mahajan and Ritesh Deshmukh come to my mind....it is another thing that I haven't seen a more pathetic C.M. than Vilasrao Deshmukh (during my stay at Pune).
This brings me to another interesting aspect of Dynasty politics...which is the non-dynastic-dynasty politics.

The B.J.P. excels in this field. Let's compare the Congress and the B.J.P. since the arrival of Mr. Vajpayee. Till date the B.J.P. has had just one (profanity) leader. The congress has had Three -four because of the untimely demise of two of them. Thus, had Indira Gandhi been alive she would have been like Vajpayee . The sole leader of her party for about 30 odd years. Where is the democracy in electing the party leadership in BJ.P.?

The moment a second claimant for the leadership arrived the B.J.P. fell apart. They had absolutely no clue whom to elect and hence Mr. Advani stepped in...why? No one has any clue. Just because he is a veteran and not because he is popular. If democracy would have prevailed Modi could have reached that position.
In the Congress a similar crisis emerged with Sita Ram Kesri's blasphemous move to express the desire to lead the party. Sonia Gandhi stepped in and saved the day.

I feel in that respect the Congress is better equipped to resolve such disputes since there is a definite policy which governs their organisational policies...which is that, that the Gandhi family shall have a peremptory right to decide all such matters. This means there is some rationale behind their structure....it may not be democratic but it is definitely better than the B.J.P.'s pseudo democratic structure which in spite of all their claims has failed to produce leaders who are willing to give up power and promote democratic features in the party.

All said and done I feel that dynasty politics are is a rule of nature. Since we are all animals we have all those animal like tendencies. An animal shall always protect his family first and then the members of his species. Thus the politicians shall first take care of their children and then think about the welfare of other politicians, they being the members of their species . As far as the general public is concerned , how can we we expect the politicians to take care of their interests ; after all can the predator and the prey share cordial relations?

Necessity is the mother of Exploitation

The world in general is composed of two kinds of people. The Optimists and the Skeptics.
Some one who surely was a member of the former category of people once quite famously remarked that Necessity is the mother of invention. What that fellow failed to foresee was that every invention brings along a new class of slaves who , in order to properly and fully use that invention, are then systematically exploited. The need of the hour was to have a large land plying locomotive in place. The steam engine was invented. With it's invention came the need for tracks, and tracks demanded timber and metal. Both these things required cheap labour to obtain them from woods and mines. Then you needed a class of men who y it to the sites. After that you needed men to convert these materials into useful products. Once the materials took the shape of industrially usable products there arose the need for men who would then finally use these materials to make those tracks and trains. But hold..on......to lay down tracks we need to cut hills and level the ground...and all that needs cheap labour, once these obstacles are overcome comes the need to hire new labour which shall actually lay down those tracks. Of course we need bridges and a whole lot of such engineering marvels to successfully use the invention. Thus one invention gives rise to infinite opportunities for exploiting helpless people.
I am not sure whether any of the above mentioned persons who contributed towards the development of the whole invention would ever be able to enjoy it's benefits. They won't be given concessions, won't get travel benefits , won't get quota's or free food on board those trains. Those trains shall never be available for their needs or to cater to their requirements. In fact all those who had absolutely nothing to do with the entire thing and process s hall be the ones who shall be given the best available berths, accommodation and facility which the train can afford. Also it would be to serve their commercial and other interests that the train service shall be designed. I am jot talking about the middle class , I am talking about the bureaucracy, industrialists, politicians and their sycophants.
Those who think that such ambitious projects and inventions generate employment are not wrong, but they miss a very important point. Every life lost and every sacrifice made for the giving shape to these monuments is eventually for the benefit of those who never were concerned with any part of this matter. All this is true as also is the fact that entire chain of persons who were employed in this activity would not have been paid anything equitable to their efforts.
Even if we leave aside such controversial topics where labour's exploitation acoording to some , is inevitable, necessity leaves us with many examples where the invention has given birth to intellectual as well as emotional exploitation. In the case of press. Since freedom of expression was the need, there arose the press. With it emerged a class which soon started exploiting it's power and the people who felt that it was necessary to have something like the press in place soon became the subjects of it's exploitative tendencies. Every necessity thus creates a class which would be subjected to inhuman and grossly unjust treatment to help the suprerior class to enjoy the invention which has been designed to meet the necessity. Necessity is thus the mother of exploitation which shall be used to utilize the invention which was contemporaneously developed and which will in the end benefit those who had nothing to do with the development of the invention or had contributed not a single penny in it's development.

Unless such injustice is removed I cannot accept tacitly the claim that necessity is the mother of invention..period.

Price rise and patriotism

The expense at which patriotism is bought forces me to think about the actual nature of patriotism and it's value.

A light trek

For a change, we decided to walk down to the fields.
we took the path used by the villagers, unlike them we had no bundles of wood or fodder to carry.
the path was steep but was quite well maintained, better than the roads in our metros.
the sounds of our footsteps were in harmony with the rustling of leaves and the cool breeze which was omniscient.
for a change we didn't have to pretend that we were enjoying something; we actually were totally in awe of the settings. clearly , there was more to the scenery than what met the eye. the brown earth and the green hedges made for an aesthetically exquisite combination.
the sweat which trickled down our forehead cleansed the impure and unclean residues of the fast city life.
many villagers passed us by. we expected many a curious stare to greet us. interestingly we were the ones who couldn't resist the temptation to stare at the villagers who were quite comfortable with our presence.
when we did reach the fields, half the scenery had made a home in our hearts. the remaining half made it's way into our hearts when we started on the path which would take us to the motorable road where we had parked our locomotives.
when we glanced down upon the fields after completing the ascent there was nothing down there which seemed alien or unfamiliar.

FLYOVERS

The world beneath those monstrous structures is a different one.
quite different you see when i look at the world in which i live or want to.
sometimes i think they were built to overlook what lies beneath
or may be to overlook the ground realities.
when i cross them i never want to look down
for i know that i fear that what lies there
may pull me down.
so i smugly sit in the car, windows shut
and look straight ahead
as the slope which leads to the road triggers a stimulated sensation
in my body.
